Constantine called his Eastern capital Nea Roma, or New Rome, but the city was eventually renamed in his honor.  Constantinople was considered the leading city in the Christian world in the 5th century, as the West struggled through centuries of barbarian invasions and feudal frustration.

From great churches to crumbling columns, traces of the old Roman capital can still be found here, at the exotic and unforgettable city we now know as Istanbul.
