Annie Moore leaving Cobh for America

Cobh has always looked to the sea.  It is and has always been the premier port for Southern Ireland, as well as for the Ireland’s famous city of Cork.

Cobh (pronounced like the word COVE) has strong links with ocean liners.  Two in particular… the Lusitania – a Cunard liner on her way from New York, she arrived close to Cobh on May 7th 1915, when she was torpedoed by a German U-Boat.

Titanic’s last port before she set out across the Atlantic on her ill-fated maiden voyage
was Cobh.

Cobh is famous in Ireland for the Great Emigration as well.  Between 1855 and 1950, 6 million Irish emigrated to North America.  And 2.5 million of those 6 million sailed from Cobh.
