Costa Rica is located in Central America, nestled between Nicaragua and Panamá, and bordering both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean.  In terms of area, the country is slightly smaller than West Virginia.  But for such a small country, Costa Rica is one of the biologically richest places on earth.

Puntarenas means ‘sandy point’ in Spanish, and our port town used to be one of the country’s principal seaports.  It was from here that much of the Central Valley’s coffee crop was once shipped, and while the coffee barons in the highlands were getting rich, so were the merchants of Puntarenas.  After losing its shipping business, Puntarenas has survived primarily on commercial fishing.
